Morgan State University has four student media operations, all housed in the School of Global Journalism & Communication. All four are open to any Morgan student interested in participation. These media operations are The Spokesman, BEAR-TV, the Strategy Shop and The Promethean.
Founded in 1942, The Spokesman is MSU’s student run newspaper delivering news coverage to the campus community and beyond. After 70 years in print format, The Spokesman went digital in 2012 to keep pace with the 24-hour news cycle and to deliver breaking news to students, faculty, alumni and surrounding neighborhood residents in the “Morgan Mile” who rely on this news coverage. The Spokesman delivers new and developing news stories multiple times a week and is committed to fair and in-depth coverage of campus, local and national news in sports, business, technology and the arts. The Spokesman is found by using the link: https://themsuspokesman.com/.
BEAR-TV Network is Morgan State University’s TV network. It offers opportunities for Morgan Students to develop their skills in research, writing, producing, and distributing content. Since its inception, BEAR-TV has grown to offer five programs: “Morgan Now” (local and campus news), “The Morgan Show” (sports), “BearPod” (a video podcast), “MSU Spectacle” (SGA highlight content) and “B.E.A.M.” (Broadcast Education Association at Morgan). In addition to these shows, each semester the network creates a variety of documentary-style productions for internal and external clients; providing more real world experience opportunities. Each semester, BEAR-TV hosts multiple hands-on workshops with external industry professions. BEAR-TV has its own YouTube channel which may be found by using this link: http://www.youtube.com/MorganStateUniversityBEARTV
The Strategy Shop is a student-staffed operation that, under faculty supervision, creates and executes strategic communication campaigns for real clients. Organized similarly to real world agencies, The Strategy Shop’s staff meets with clients to determine their needs, researches the stakeholder publics and designs campaigns to reach those publics. Campaigns not only use traditional methods of communication, they also use the variety of social media in play today. Clients have included the Center for New Media and Strategic Initiatives, the Center for Urban Health Equity and the Howard L. Cornish Alumni Association. The Strategy Shop also provided social media coverage for the 2022 elections.
The Promethean is the University’s yearbook. Produced digitally, it provides MSU students the opportunity to develop skills in journalism, editing, graphics and more. The Promethean focuses on the senior class and provides an historical record of Morgan’s graduating classes’ academic and social activities and achievements.
Students interested in working on The spokesman, BEAR-TV, The Strategy Shop or The Promethean should contact the School of Global Journalism & Communication.
