                | HIST 390 - History of Modern Japan3 credits
 3 hours per week.
 
 This course covers all aspects of Japanese history since about 1800, including politics, economic trends, socio-cultural and intellectual changes, and foreign relations. Several themes receive particular attention: the conflict between local institutions and foreign ideologies, Sino-Japanese relations, the development of Japanese science and technology, and the contemporary rise to great power status.
