POSC 319 - Immigration and Refugee Law 3 credits 3 hours per week.
This course provides an overview of U.S. Immigration Law which encompasses Refugee and Asylum Law. It places emphasis on immigration laws and policies in the United States and examines among others the historical background of immigration, the impact of immigration, the various federal agencies, national and domestic organizations involved with immigration, immigrant and nonimmigrant visas, enforcement measures against undocumented immigrants and U.S. Citizenship. It also examines the international and domestic aspects of refugee and asylum law and reviews the various United Nations conventions pertaining to refugees and asylum seekers. The course gives students the opportunity to reflect and share their thoughts on contentious current immigration hot topics such as undocumented immigrants, the immigration border crisis, the extensive backlog of immigration court cases and the global plight of asylees and refugees among others..
