CICS 302 - Civic Engagement and Interdisciplinary Approaches to Citizenship 3 credits This course examines the ethical, political, and social dimensions of civic engagement through an interdisciplinary lens, drawing from political science, sociology, communication, African American studies, and identity studies. Students will explore historical and contemporary conceptions of citizenship and civic action in the United States, with a particular focus on how race, culture, and identity shape civic participation. Emphasis is placed on both local community involvement and national policy issues, highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities faced by historically marginalized groups.
Through seminar-style discussions, reflective writing, and collaborative inquiry, students will critically analyze the intersections of ethics, social justice, and public responsibility. A key component of the course is a service-learning experience or the development of a civic action project, enabling students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world contexts and contribute meaningfully to their communities. This course prepares students to become informed, ethical, and active participants in democratic society.
