THE MAJOR IN CIVIL ENGINEERING (CEGR) or Sustainable Urban Environmental Engineering (SUEE)

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CEED) provides two BS (CEGR and SUEE) programs of study in the planning, design and management of civil and environmental  environmental infrastructure and service systems. In the CEGR program, specialty areas of study include transportation engineering, environmental and water resources engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydrology and hydraulic engineering, and construction engineering and management.  In the SUEE program, the special area centers in environmental engineering, partiuclarly particularly the special topics on urban environmental issues.  The civil engineering undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accredited Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org

The undergraduate program in SUEE is designed to allow students to obtain an undergraduate degree in four years.  This four-year degree program is designed and will be developed to obtain ABET accreditation, which will enable the students of SUEE to be credentialed as an engineer-in-training and eventually as a Professional Engineer in Environmental Engineering.  Students will learn the core principles of sustainability and design sustainable urban environments and related tasks.

OBJECTIVES

The Program Educational Objectives of the Civil Engineering Department are  to: (1) Assume managerial and/or leadership roles in their chosen professional careers within six years of graduation (e.g. a project manager, a project engineer, etc), (2) Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination, (3) Be employed and function well in the civil engineering system and processes, and STEM related areas; and  (4) Make contributions that advance the current state-of-the-practice in technology and/or research of civil engineering systems and processes; and (5) Continue their professional development through continuous improvement and life-long learning (e.g. graduate school, professional engineering (PE) licenses, professional certifications, etc.).

STUDENT OUTCOMES

Student outcomes from the Civil Engineering (CEGR) or Sustainable Urban Environmental Engineering (SUEE) programs are:

(1)  an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.

(2)  an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

(3)    an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

(4) an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economics, environmental, and societal contexts.

(5)   an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.

(6)   an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

(7) an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
