Mission

Morgan State University’s Clara I. Adams Honors College exists to promote excellence in academic, personal, cultural, and professional endeavors among students having a demonstrated record of scholarly accomplishments, high motivation, and a desire to achieve at the highest levels.  By developing and facilitating activities that create and maintain a superlative learning environment, the University Honors College seeks to significantly impact a community of engaged learners with diverse backgrounds; presenting them with opportunities to realize their full intellectual potential, while exercising all their talents and skills to serve as global leaders.  

We accomplish our mission by:  offering academic scholarships to prospective candidates in high schools, community colleges, and within the University;  coordinating with the University deans to encourage the continual enhancement of the academic curricula in the major fields of study and the development and maintenance of a rigorous curriculum that are especially suited for high-ability students;  engaging students with experiential learning opportunities; require participation in community service based extracurricular activities;  and collecting and distributing information regarding elite educational and employment opportunities.

The curriculum and service-leadership program serves a diverse student population from Baltimore City, the many counties of Maryland, and the remaining United States and American protectorates.  International students also participate in the program.

Honors students complete comprehensive curricula in both the liberal arts and their major fields of study to obtain theoretical and practical knowledge and skills applicable to post-baccalaureate pursuits in academia and industry.  The Honors College seminar curriculum consists of courses aimed at furthering interdisciplinary discourse to heighten students’ leadership goals, exemplary scholarship and General Education curriculum consists of accelerated and intensified courses.

 

Academic Affairs Resources and Opportunities

The University allocates significant financial resources to Honors scholarships that are awarded to the Clara I. Adams Honors College.  These scholarships are meant to help reduce the financial burden associated with funding a college education.  The following are a list of scholarships that are currently offered by the Clara I. Adams Honors College.  The requirements and terms of each currently available scholarship are listed below:

The Martin D.Jenkins Scholarship awards up to the full amount of tuition, fees, approved on-campus room and board, and up to $500/semester for books, for up to four years consecutively.  Students must maintain a 3.6/4/0 cumulative grade point average in addition to all other requirements set forth by the honors college.  This scholarship is considered for Incoming Freshman applicants only.

The Honors Associate Scholarship awards up to $2000/year for up to 4 years consecutively.  Applied in addition to any other scholarships or grants a student may be receiving from he University or from other sources, up to the student’s MSU cost of attendance budget.  Students must maintain a 3.4 cumulative grade point average in addition to all other requirements set forth by the honors college.  This scholarship is considered for Incoming Freshman applicants only.

The Earl S. Richardson Scholarship awards up to $2000/year for up to 4 years consecutively.  Applied in addition to any other scholarships or grants a student may be receiving from the University or from other sources, up to the student’s MSU cost of attendance budget.  Students must maintain a 3.4 cumulative grade point average in addition to all other requirements set forth by the honors college.  This scholarship is considered for Incoming Continuing students only.

It is the official stance of the Clara I. Adams Honors College that enrollment in the CIA-Honors College does NOT guarantee that a student will receive an Honors Scholarship.  The Clara I. Adams Honors College encourages its students to pursue supplemental learning opportunities such as internships, work-study, experiential advantage, impactful service, and cooperative experiences sponsored by academic, business, industrial, and government agencies.  Please note that Clara I. Adams Honors college scholarship offerings are subject to change.

 

Admission to the Clara I. Adams Honors College

Incoming First-Time Freshmen

Entering freshmen who have submitted a complete application to Morgan State University by the Office of Admissions posted early deadline, and have been officially admitted to the university shall be eligible for admission into the Honors College.  The following minimum criteria must be met:  a minimum high school grade point average of 3.8 or higher (weighted high school grade point averages may be used for this purpose), and a complete Honors college application to be submitted by the Honors College Application deadline of January 31st.

Transfer Students

Transfer students who have earned up to, but no more than sixty (6) transferable college credit hours shall be eligible to apply to the Honors College.  The following criteria must be met:  a minimum college cumulative grade point average of 3.6 or higher and a complete Honors College Application to be submitted by deadline published on he CIA-Honors College page of Morgan State University’s website.

Continuing Students

Continuing (currently enrolled) students how have earned up to, but no more than sixty (6) college credit hours will be eligible to apply to t he Honors College.  The following criteria must be met:  a minimum college cumulative grade point average of 3.6 or higher and a complete Honors application to be submitted by deadline published on the CIA-Honors College page of Morgan State University’s website.

 

The Honors Curriculum

General Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree programs at Morgan State University are structured for completion in four years (eight sequential semesters) and generally require 120 credit hours.  All Morgan students receive a comprehensive liberal arts education.  When applicable, students will undertake intensive study in the General Education and major requirements in the form of an Honors version of the courses being offered.

In conjunction with the General Education and major requirements, students enrolled as University Honors College student will attend classification specific Honors Seminars, practicum and thesis portfolio presentation.
