Plan of Study

The typical plan of study requires enrollment at least nine (9) credit hours per term to maintain full-time status. Not every course is offered every term, and the following plan of study is an illustration. At the initial conference with the Concentration Coordinator, a preliminary plan of study will be established in consultation with the Program Director within the first month of the study (using the SGS Plan of Study Form), and it will be placed in the student’s official file kept by the Program Director. At this time, any anticipated exceptions or anticipated transfer credits will be noted and submitted to the School of Graduate Studies for approval. An estimated time for completion of the thesis must be included. Changes to the plan of study must be approved by both the advisor and the Program Director.

During the first semester of enrollment, the student starts a laboratory rotation among the potential faculty members. The Concentration Coordinator will suggest 3-5 such faculty members and the student is supposed to meet with these faculty members and work in the faculty’s laboratory for a minimum of two weeks. At the end of the rotation, which is supposed to complete within the first semester of study, the student will select an advisor and sign the advisor form, thus an advisor-advisee relationship is established. Any change to it will require the approval of the Program Coordinator.
