Program Description
The Morgan Master of Science (MS) in Hospitality Management is a two-year course of study designed for individuals who seek to increase their executive status and enhance their managerial competencies in the hospitality and tourism industry. The program prepares global hospitality leaders who are equipped with the requisite tools to make strategic decisions and to analyze and solve real world hospitality challenges. Managerial and leadership expertise are strengthened and honed through various advanced business and hospitality courses, allowing graduates of the program to develop the skills, knowledge and abilities to direct and manage complex and innovative hospitality systems.
Program Objectives
Upon completion of the MS in Hospitality Management program, students should be able to:
-
Assess complex managerial issues facing hospitality and tourism firms and provide well-thought out solutions
-
Lead a diverse group of individuals to conceptualize ideas and strategies to meet the needs of firms
-
Use data analytical tools and technology to make sound decisions, improving firms’ performance and productivity
-
Manage global hospitality operations
-
Identify ethical challenges and find reasonable solutions to address ethical issues that may arise within the organization
-
Conceptualize and develop entrepreneurial ventures within the hospitality and tourism industry
General Requirements
Candidates for the MS in Hospitality Management degree must complete a minimum of thirty (30) academic credit hours of 600-level courses. Additional credit hours may be required to complete prerequisite courses.
Students may receive ‘C’ grades in no more than 6 credits of the coursework undertaken. If a student exceeds this credit allowance, the student must retake the same courses with C grades until satisfactory grades are earned to bring the student in compliance with the regulation.
All Core Courses should be taken at the Graves School of Business. There may be exceptional circumstances that require a Core class to be taken elsewhere. This requires approval of the Director of the Masters Programs or Dean of the School of Business and Management. Students may take elective courses at Morgan State (any 600 level graduate class on campus) OR at the Carey School of Business at Johns Hopkins University under a cross registration agreement between the two schools.
Admission
Admission into the MS Hospitality Management Program requires the applicant to be a holder of an undergraduate degree and provide proof that the applicant is able to successfully complete a graduate program and transfer learning to make impactful decisions at the managerial level within global hospitality organizations. To do this, the candidate must furnish information to be assessed to determine admissibility.
These following items are required for successful admission into the Hospitality program:
-
Completed Application
-
Transcripts from all schools attended. International applicants MUST submit a course-by-course evaluated transcript from one of the following evaluation services (WES.org, ECE.org, FIS.org, SPANTran.com, or myIEE.com)
-
Two letters of recommendation
-
A detailed resume
-
A personal statement on what role the Masters in Hospitality will play in attaining professional goals
-
A virtual interview may also be required at the discretion of the Program Director
Once admitted, a new student may be required to take select Foundation Courses. These courses are intended to provide students with a sound understanding of organizations and business. These fundamental concepts are necessary to compete in the 600 level Core Courses. An admitted student’s academic (transcript) and professional background will be analyzed to highlight relevant knowledge to compete effectively. Foundation courses may be required to fill in required knowledge.
Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements and submitting all the required documents does not guarantee that an offer of admission will be made to the applicant. The decision of the Program Admissions Committee involves a review and analysis of all the elements of the application as well as the availability of positions in the program.
Program Course Requirements
The MS Hospitality Management requires 30 Credits taken in the following sequence over 2 years.
