ENGL 347 - Women Writers in Africa and the Diaspora

3 hours per week.

This course focuses on the emergence of women writers in Africa and the Diaspora in the last one hundred years. It gives attention to the literary foremothers, such as Frances Harper, Zora Neale Hurston, Anne Petry, Paule Marshall, Toni Morrison, Audre Lorde, Maryse Condé, Merle Hodge, Nancy Morejon, Buchi Emecheta, Edwidge Danticat and others. These writers will be examined in the context of the historical, cultural, and socio-political milieu in which they wrote.
