ART 425 - Methods of Art History

3 Credits
3 lecture hours.

This seminar is designed to enhance students’ understanding of art history by identifying and analyzing the various conventions, approaches and developments underlying this discipline.  Beginning with an analysis of the key texts that have informed the diverse critical practices of this discipline, each seminar will offer an overview of various models of criticism by situating them within their historical as well as theoretical contexts, and then discussing their significance to the production and interpretation of historical events and artistic developments.  The goal of this course is to give students an understanding of art history as a discourse that make other discourses (namely art, history, literature, and religion) intelligible.  therefore, the object of inquiry is not historical events or works of art themselves, but the methods used to research and critique them.
