ELED 320 - Micro Skills in Teaching Reading: Phonological Awareness


3 credits
3 hours per week. 3 lecture hours.

This course seeks to enhance the knowledge of teacher candidates related to enacting individualized reading programs for individuals, especially those whose proficiency may be lower than expected based on their grade level.  This course will provide in-depth strategies for addressing phonological awareness as a means of enhancing teacher candidates’ knowledge of: (1) reading processes; (2) strategies for developing students’ (including those with special needs) vocabulary and comprehension skills; and (3) the importance of integrating all aspects of phonological awareness which includes word awareness, rhyme, syllable awareness, sound manipulation, and phoneme awareness; and (4) reading disabilities such as Dyslexia.
