Mission Statement

 

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences prepares students with competencies and skills required for public service to address ongoing changes and new developments in goods and services.  The department conducts research to implement progress that will improve family life in urban populations.  Through collaborative relationships, the department enhances the viability and quality of family life in the communities served by the University.

Family and Consumer Sciences address broad concepts focusing on family, individual, and community well-being.

Goals and Objectives

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences seeks to develop students who are able to:

  1. Translate the fundamental concepts and principles of Family and Consumer Sciences into effective personal and family life.
  2. Exemplify a sense of social responsibility and the ability to function interdependently and perform family functions effectively.
  3. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary for professional competence.
  4. Address societal concerns and work with communities to implement programs to improve family life.
