ELED 412 - Assessment of Reading Instruction and Classroom Diagnostics

3 Credits
Three hours per week.

This course is designed to assist elementary and secondary teacher education candidates in becoming proficient consumers of classroom based assessment measures and assessment data. Among the topics to be explored are legal and ethical issues related to assessment as well as the issue of possible bias in formal assessment. Factors that may contribute to reading difficulties for students will be addressed, and a discussion of how assessments can be modified to meet these students’ needs will be included. Instruction will focus on building knowledge on the purposes of assessment, types of assessment tools, how to administer and use several valid, reliable, well- researched formal and informal assessments of reading and related skills, how to effectively interpret the results of assessments, and how to communicate these results in a variety of contexts. Further, candidates will demonstrate the ability to utilize assessment data to guide instructional decisions. All course activities will help candidates to acquire strategies for developing State and National Assessment competencies for elementary students.
