MAJOR Requirements

In addition to meeting the General Education, University, and Biology major requirements, students must also complete six (6) credits in the Complementary Studies. This is required of all majors in the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (SCMNS). Options for satisfying this requirement are outlined in the Requirements for Graduation section under SCMNS. In addition, in order to qualify for graduation, students must pass the Senior Departmental Comprehensive Examination; must have taken all of their junior-and senior-level requirements in the major at Morgan (unless granted prior written permission by the Dean to take courses elsewhere); and must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better, and a major average of 2.0 or better with no outstanding grades below “C” in the major (which includes all courses required for the major and required supporting prerequisites/co-requisites, complementary and free elective courses).  Students must pass the Senior Departmental Comprehensive Examination and must have taken all of their junior and senior level requirements in the major at Morgan (unless granted prior written permission by the Dean to take courses elsewhere).

Required Courses for the Major in Biology

In order to satisfy requirements for the major in Biology, students must complete the courses listed below. Students are expected to complete the core courses in Biology (105, 106, 204, 2XX, 303, 310, and 450 or 451 or 453).  Also, students select 12 credits from courses BIOL 3XX or 4XX or CHEM 202 or CHEM 304 (CHEM 304 is required for pre-professional and graduate school). The required Chemistry courses are: CHEM 105, 106, 203, and 204. The required Physics courses are PHYS 203 or 205, and PHYS 204 or 206. MATH 241 and 242 are prerequisites for PHYS 205. The requirements for Mathematics are: MATH 114 or higher for the General Biology track and MATH 241 or higher for the Pre-Professional Biology track.

Requirements for the B.S. Degree in Biology

A minimum of 120 credit hours are required to graduate with a B.S. in Biology.  These credit hours are distributed as follows:

General Education and Univeristy Requirements    44 credits

Complementary Studies    6 credits

Required Courses for the Biology Major    70 credits

Total Credits    120

General Education and University Requirements 44 credits

Note

* denotes a department required supporting/major course which may fulfill a general education requirement and must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher

MATH 241  must be taken to fulfill the MQ requirement in the Biomedical/Preprofessional Track

PSYC 101  must be taken to fulfill one of the SB requirements in the Biomedical/Preprofessional Track

Note

* denotes a department required supporting/major course which may fulfill a general education requirement and must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher

MATH 241  is a department supporting course which fuliflls the MQ requirement for the Biomedical/Preprofessional Track

Complementary Studies 6 credits

Students must complete six credits in the Complementary Studies Program which are required of al lmajors in the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (SCMNS).  Options for satisfying this requirement are outlined under the section on the SCMNS.

  • XXXX - Complementary Studies Electives 6 credits

Required Courses for the Major in Biology 70 credits

Note

* denotes a department required supporting/major course which may fulfill a general education requirement and must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher

1 CHEM Elective must be one course chosen from CHEM 202  or CHEM 304 .  Please know that only CHEM 304  can fulfill a minor in chemistry.  A 400 level BIOL Course is not an option and  CHEM 304  is the only choice for this if following the Biomedical/Preprofessional Track

2 Quantitative Analysis Elective is one course chosen from the following:  ACCT 201 ECON 211 ECON 212 PSYC 316 PSYC 317 MATH 120 MATH 241 MATH 242 MATH 331  .  PSYC 316  must be chosen if following the Biomedical/Preprofessional Track

BIOL 450 BIOL 451 , and BIOL 453  may not be used to satisfy the 400 level Biology Course requirement

4 For the Free Elective, students may choose a course that is not being used to concomitantly fulfill another Biology curriculum requirement, a university general education requirement, or the complimentary studies requirement.  It is in the best interest of the student to choose a course that is directly pertinent to and which adds breadth to the student’s particular interest, continued education and career goals

MATH 241  and MATH 242  are co-requisites for PHYS 205  and PHYS 205L  and PHYS 206  and PHYS 206L  respectively, if selected

BIOL 209  must be taken if following the Biomedical/Preprofessional Track

7 A second math course is not required if following the Biomedical/Preprofessional Track

Biology Biomedical/Pre-Professional Track

For the pre-professional track, MATH 241 (Calculus I) is required as a supporting course and to fulfill the MQ general education requirement. Therefore, if a student requires MATH 114 or lower, the student will be required to take the additional MATH classes or choose the general track.

Students wishing to follow a biomedical/pre-professional track in Biology should follow the Biology curriculum except for the following changes:

  • Students should take MATH 241  instead of MATH 113 in order to fulfill the MQ general education requirement.
  • Students must take PSYC 101  in order to fulfill one of the SB general education requirements.
  • Students must take BIOL 209  in order to fulfill the 200 level BIOL Course in the major requirements.
  • Students must take CHEM 204  instead of choosing between a CHEM Elective or 400 level Biology Course in the major requirements
  • Students must take PSYC 316  in order to fulfill the Quantitative Analysis Elective.
  • Students are NOT required to take a second MATH course.
  • Students must take PSYC 108  in order to fulfill a major requirement.
  • Students must take 3 credits of free electives instead of 2 credits of free electives to fulfill a major requirement.

Total Credits 120
